My name’s Lauren Mannion and I’m an Apprentice Chartered Legal Executive.
When I finished my A-levels, I didn’t know if I wanted to study law at university or start my working life. I looked around different universities and applied for a few apprenticeships but after lots of consideration, I decided that an apprenticeship at Irwin Mitchell was the best route for me.
Career progression is really important to me and it’s something that really attracted me to the role I have here. I’m keen to learn and develop my knowledge, so I can further my career and set myself up for the future.
My Apprenticeship Journey
In 2016, I applied for the role of a Paralegal Apprentice, which was two-year apprenticeship. I had to submit an online application and a cover letter. Then, I was invited to an assessment day where I had a series of interviews and had to deliver a presentation.
When I had my interview, I instantly felt comfortable because of the hard-working, supportive environment and the friendly people here.
After this apprenticeship, I started my Chartered Legal Executive Apprentice role, which is a four-year qualification. From speaking to clients to reviewing medical reports, and building long-term relationships, I’m really enjoying this role and no two days are the same.
A Role Filled With Variety
Working in such a large firm means the cases that I work on are complex and high quality, so my days are always varied.
I have a caseload of around 35-40 clients who are looking for support and compensation through a medical negligence claim. I speak to my clients to pull together evidence. I also review medical reports and records, and then liaise with experts, as well as other colleagues, to see if we have a case. I also work regularly with barristers.
Speaking to my clients on a regular basis, whether that’s by phone, on a video call, or face-to-face is so important. As cases are often overwhelming and emotionally charged, clients need to be updated every step of the way and communication is vital. We tailor our method of contact and frequency based on what’s best for our clients. Some cases can continue for several years and proceed well into the court proceedings process and I really enjoy building a trusted relationship with my clients, so I can be a guiding hand throughout their legal journey.
A Supportive Culture Which Delivers Success
The culture here is extremely open and ambitious. I’ve received amazing support from my line manager and colleagues, and they’re really invested in my development and progression. Everyone’s proud to work here and there’s a clear motivation to deliver value for our clients and go above and beyond their expectations.
I’m part of the first ever group of apprentices we’ve had here and I’ve loved the experience. I’ve been able to really get to know my colleagues and we’ve fostered a great team spirit, which is both collaborative and flexible.
With our flexible by choice policy, we’re trusted to shape our days and do the right work at the right time, in the right way, which is empowering. I’ve benefited from this policy because without the commute, it gives me an extra couple of hours a day to really focus on getting my work done.
We also give back to our communities through our annual two-day volunteering allowance, which is always extremely rewarding. I used one of the days to volunteer at an animal sanctuary which was a great opportunity. I also volunteered at a local food bank with my team.
My Future Aspirations
I completed my apprenticeship in November 2022 and am due to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive in April 2023.
I’d like to stay here and continue to work in medical law. I feel lucky that I’ve been able to find an area of law that I am passionate about and want to specialise in. I’m also fortunate that I’m supported by a fantastic line manager, alongside my team, who encourage me to develop every day.
