My name’s Jenna Biddle and I’m an apprentice in our Human Resources team, specifically business partnering.
This apprenticeship lasts two years and covers HR, business partnering and consultancy. Since my first day, I’ve really grown in confidence and built strong relationships across the business. I feel privileged that at this early stage in my career, I can help to make a difference whether that’s big or small, to our colleagues.
Working For A Firm That Genuinely Cares
After finishing sixth form, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my career. I felt lost. I knew I enjoyed working and I wanted to apply my knowledge and develop new skills, whilst earning money and being independent. I was looking for a challenge that was both exciting and hands-on, so I decided an apprenticeship was the route for me.
Working for a company that genuinely cares about its employees is something I really value. After researching different roles and companies, it was clear that Irwin Mitchell had everything I was looking for. It had a strong emphasis on career development and progression, a flexible approach to work, a supportive culture, and lots of networking groups I could get involved in. I also recognised the high percentage of women in leadership roles here, which I found very inspiring.
Learning More About The Company
I thoroughly enjoyed the application process for this apprenticeship, which enabled me to learn more about what it’s like to work here and the company’s values.
I didn’t have much experience when I applied, but it was refreshing that the interviews were based on my personality and the skills I could bring to the role.
I had two interviews. The first one was about getting to know me and my interests, and the second interview was more skills focused. These interviews pushed me outside my comfort zone, but the interviewers really made me feel at ease and it was just a normal conversation. I felt comfortable asking questions so I could find out more about the type of work I’d be getting involved in, and the different teams here.
My Apprenticeship Experience
When I first joined, I was very nervous because coming straight from sixth form, I wasn’t sure what to expect in such a large company. However, I’ve had so much support from my line manager and different members of the HR team. They’ve answered any questions I’ve had, pointed me in the right direction, and shared their experiences with me.
Over the course of my apprenticeship, I’ve gained confidence and built relationships across the firm. I’ve seen the value of these relationships, as I’ve been able to listen to a variety of colleagues and take their feedback on board, so we can understand where we need to make changes.
I’m really enjoying my role here. There’s so much to get involved with and every day is different for me. I’ve been doing some shadowing with the HR advisor in employee relation cases, which is challenging, but extremely interesting. I’m also based in the organisation design team where I look at different ways of working and discuss topics such as the great place to work survey, which looks at employee engagement.
Alongside this, I complete assignments on a range of modules such as diversity and inclusion, reward, talent and relationship management. Being able to study alongside my day-to-day job has really developed my knowledge and skillset in this area.
When my apprenticeship finishes, I’d like to continue to work here. I’d be interested in a role where I get to showcase my communication and relationship building skills. I also want a job where I can help people and make a real difference.
