How long do I have to make a claim through the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme?
The scheme was announced on 12 December 2024 and applies to those affected by the ban who served in the armed forces between 27 July 1967 and 11 January 2000.
The deadline for applications is 12 December 2026. If you don’t apply in time, you’ll lose your right to a payment under the scheme.
Why choose Irwin Mitchell to handle your LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme claim?
It’s important to submit your application with as much detail and supporting evidence as possible. There are limited grounds for appeal, with strict time limits, so having specialist advice from the beginning will increase your chances of success.
If you’ve made an application for a recognition payment that’s been rejected, we can support you through the appeals process.
Our specialist military legal team has over 25 years’ experience advising and supporting veterans and serving members of the armed forces.
Our team includes lawyers who’ve served in the armed forces, which gives us a unique insight into the culture and life in the military. This means we understand the concerns you’ll have if the ban impacted your career.
We work closely with the military charity, Fighting With Pride, and share their commitment to support LGBT veterans, serving personnel and their families.
Our experienced team of Court of Protection solicitors can help you make a claim if your loved one no longer has the mental capacity to complete the application themselves. In these circumstances, our legal representatives may complete and submit the application on their behalf.
Our dedicated Wills team can help you protect the interests of your Estate and/or beneficiaries in respect of any recognition payment made and with any wider questions you may have in relation to Wills and estate planning.
Our in-house support services will also be there to offer you any support you feel you need while your claim is ongoing. Our Asset Management team of financial experts will also be there to give you tailored guidance on how to manage your reparation payments once your claim is settled.
