What To Expect When You Make A Medical Negligence Claim
We know it can be daunting to make a compensation claim and we understand the hardship you may be going through – not only with your injuries, but also financially. Our team is experienced and know exactly what needs to be done to improve things.
When you make a claim with us our first job will be to investigate your treatment concerns and then try and get the organisation responsible for your injuries to admit fault and provide a formal apology. It’s important to establish this early on in your case, as it can then help us to claim interim compensation payments.
Interim payments are early compensation payments that are made while your claim is going through. They can cover your expenses for things like physiotherapy, or making adaptations to your home. They can also cover your loss of earnings.
We’ll offer you the services of one of our Support & Rehabilitation specialists at the start of your claim. Our Support & Rehabilitation team is there to help make your life easier. They can help you get access to specialist rehabilitation and support services, as well as state benefits.
Your medical negligence claim could well take a few years to settle. This is because it can take a while to understand how far you’ll recover from your injuries, and how they will impact your life in the long-term. While your claim is going through we’ll work hard to make sure you have the compensation and specialist support you need.

Case Study: Husband And Lawyers Support Cancer Campaign Following Wife’s Death
Charlotte Kerns of Salford died when she was 48. She’d developed malignant melanoma which spread to her brain, spine, lungs, and leg.
In the four years before Charlotte's diagnosis, she’d visited GPs several times. She’d been concerned about a mole-like growth on the top of her left hand. The growth was twice removed but grew back each time. No biopsies were undertaken.
Charlotte needed the growth removed for a third time, which was when a biopsy was finally done. This confirmed the growth was malignant. Charlotte had surgery to remove tissue around the tumour and a skin graft.
About 18 months later she had a seizure while driving home from work. Charlotte was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour, which was confirmed to be caused by the malignant melanoma from her hand.
Charlotte instructed our medical negligence lawyers to investigate if the cancer could have been diagnosed sooner. Tragically, she died in November 2021. However, her husband Richard took on her quest for answers.
Richard has joined us in supporting World Cancer Day.
“I’d do anything to have Charlotte back in my life. However, I know that’s not possible but feel I deserve answers regarding what happened.
“I also hope that by speaking out, people and families affected by cancer feel they don’t have to suffer alone as help and support is out there.”
Richard Kerns, Charlotte’s husband
“Sadly, through our work we often see the impact cancer can have and how early detection and treatment are key to beating it.
“World Cancer Day is an important reminder of the need for everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer.
“While nothing can make up for his loss Richard hopes that by sharing his story he can help others.”
Ruth Thomas, Associate Solicitor
