With everyone busier than ever before, we’ve chosen five virtual events you might have missed and put them together in one handy place.
Since the pandemic changed everything in the spring last year, we’ve been using Microsoft Teams to host discussions on key subjects that have a seismic impact on our clients who have suffered a serious injury or illness.
It’s allowed us to bring together physios, client liaison managers, health professionals, charity contacts and our colleagues to chat about the impact of COVID-19, from virtual rehabilitation to dealing with isolation.
Check out some of our best bits here:
1) Tech Adaptations, Toys and Terrific Things to Do
We count down the top ten toys that focus on therapeutic benefit for our disabled clients, but are also lots of fun.
Our client liaison manager Carmel Gallagher considers how play can be promoted and therapy goals can be met without the needs for specialist equipment. She is joined by the tech adaptions team from William Merritt who highlight the benefits of adaptive switches and promoting their sensory toy library.
The brilliant charity, Family Fund, also join us to talk all things tech with their Digital Training programme for parents.
2) Making the Internet Safe
Our half day conference explores in detail how we can make the internet a safer place for vulnerable adults and children.
It starts with our human rights experts Emma Earnshaw and Rosie Banks discussing mental capacity and best interests decisions around social media and wider internet use. We’re also joined by Jeff Goodright, from Cyber Spider, a cyber safeguarding company, who talks about cyber profiling and managing cyber-threats for vulnerable clients.
Our special guests are Zach and his mum Claire, who talk about why they’re petitioning government to put an end to online trolling, where for some unfathomable reason they are targeting people with conditions affected by strobe lights and similar effects. You can read more about Zach's story here.
3) Let's Talk About Cancer
The impact of COVID-19 has affected us all greatly and during this time it’s increasingly important that we seek advice on all of our health concerns, particularly those which might be linked to cancer.
Professor Sikora is an expert in oncology with over 50 years of experience and he is passionate about encouraging everyone to seek medical advice and treatment to avoid delays in diagnosis and future delays in treatment. He shares details on how GPs and hospitals have adapted and are set-up to continue to offer services to patients during this challenging time and answers a range of questions during a Q&A.
We’re also joined by Bob McBratney, a client of ours who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Bob talks about his experience of undergoing treatment and attending appointments over recent months and how the measures that have been put in place have provided reassurance.
4) Spinal Cord Injury and Mental Wellbeing
As part of our activities to support World Mental Health Day we took a look at the importance of maintaining good mental health and wellbeing, when you’re living with or caring for a person with a spinal cord injury.
A life-changing injury like this presents a number of challenges, from the acute injury period and treatment through to rehabilitation and life beyond to living in the community again. This webinar offers tips, advice and practical strategies to develop coping mechanisms to support you and your loved ones.
We’re joined by Ian Younghusband, counselling and wellbeing officer at the Spinal Injuries Association, Dr Parashar Ramanuj, consultant psychiatrist at the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre and Anne Luttman-Johnson, a former client liaison manager and current mentor and trustee at The Backup Trust.
5) Virtual Event: Focus On Amputee Therapy
We explore the psychological issues arising from limb loss and look at how rehabilitation can be advanced through quality input from specialist physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
There’s a range of speakers who are well known in their fields including clinical psychologist, Dr Louise Johnson, occupational therapist, Rachel Wilson, specialist amputee physiotherapist Penny Broomhead, and a range of our legal experts who support clients who’ve had an amputation as a result of a serious injury.
We’ll be back in 2021 with a whole host of topical and relevant subjects to discuss on our virtual events. Follow us on
