We’re proud to have supported our longstanding charity partner, Contact, with their Winter Wellbeing project.
Contact offer support to families with disabled children across the UK. Their new project aims to help families who experienced isolation due to reduced access to services during lockdown. They’re doing this through providing Fledgling Boxes, which are packages full of sensory items, designed to stimulate and engage children.
Contact’s manager Kate Wyke, said:
“Families of children with disabilities sadly often experience isolation, and this was heightened during the pandemic with lockdown restrictions. Many families felt alone and at crisis point with anxiety and stress. Families had no access to vital therapies, respite, or school.
“Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government and a generous donation from Irwin Mitchell, we were able to provide over 100 families in Wales with sensory boxes.
“The feedback we received from families was incredibly positive. They were thrilled to receive the sensory boxes, which brought joy to the children. The sensory boxes also provide opportunities for the whole family to enjoy time together.
“A huge thank you to Irwin Mitchell for supporting our Winter Wellbeing project.”
Contact also received great feedback from the families they support. The sensory boxes made a huge difference to families with disabled children, and we’re delighted to have helped.
A parent who has two children with sensory issues said:
“The sensory box was amazing, both of my children found different items useful. My youngest found comfort in the chew buddy, which I didn't know was even available until I saw it in the box.
“Since receiving the sensory box, my eldest has taken the marble maze with her everywhere. She needs to have something in her hand at all times and this has helped her to calm at times when she is overwhelmed.”
Another parent, whose son has cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, visual impairment, haemophilia A, and epilepsy said:
“We were really excited to receive the sensory box and there were lots of lovely surprises inside.
“My son enjoyed the water rain cloud from the day it arrived. It’s a great sensory and visual toy to play with in the bath, and it’s sturdy, which is great as my son loves to throw.
“There were many other lovely surprises inside. The timer is a good new tool for us, he uses one in school and it’s very useful to help us during different tasks at home. The torch and light up egg help relax him with and they give us lots of play ideas.”
Our medical negligence expert Kate Easy said:
“We’re delighted to hear this feedback from the families who received the sensory boxes.
“It’s just fantastic to see what a positive impact the sensory boxes had for families. We can’t wait to work with Contact again to continue to make a real difference.”
