As official legal partner to England Rugby, we’re proud to support grass roots rugby. Through the Irwin Mitchell Mentoring Club, we’re developing a community of mentors to help 35,000 young players navigate life’s ups and downs.
We’re also regular visitors to Twickenham, and this year we were able to return for the iconic Army vs Navy rugby match, after a two-year absence.
Our military team were at the game to cheer on the men in their 95th encounter at Twickenham, and the women making history in their first match at this hallowed ground. We were joined by representatives from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Benevolent Fund, The White Ensign Association and the Blue Light Cycling Club amongst others..
We were there to celebrate our Employer Recognition Gold Award, and acknowledge the work of Rugby For Heroes as they celebrated their 10th anniversary. This charity works with the rugby community to raise funds and awareness for military personnel making the transition to civilian life.
We were delighted to be joined by Delon Armitage from the charity. Delon is a rugby union coach and former player who was capped for England, making his full debut in 2008.
Twickenham stadium was bathed in sunshine as Rose Dixon of the Royal Navy and Jade Mullen of the Army led the women’s teams onto the field in front of nearly 59,000 supporters. The Army team gave a dominant performance to lift the Babcock trophy.
In the men’s match, the Navy were first on the score sheet but the Army hit back and equalised by half time. In a thrilling second half, it was end-to-end play, and the lead changed many times. The Army’s attack proved too strong in the end, and they triumphed in a 35-27 win.
World Cup and Premiership referee Sara Cox RFU led the team of officials for the match.
Our guests enjoyed a fantastic atmosphere, on the same day as the England women’s national rugby union team triumphed in the Six Nations competition. We were glad to see the Army vs Navy annual fixture back for the crowds to enjoy, and hope to see it again next year.
Andrew Buckham, a partner from our Military Injury team, said: “There were incredible performances from all the teams and players, at one of the world’s most famous stadiums.
“It was great to bring together a number of veterans welfare organisations, who all have a common aim in wanting to help and support the military community.
“It was a great way to celebrate our ERS Gold award, and recognise the hard work and efforts of these important veterans organisations.”
