The 2012 marks the 100th year of Irwin Mitchell and the 80th year of the landmarking case of Donoghue versus Stephenson.
This Paisley case has paved the way for the law of negligence and the duty of care across the UK. The University of the West of Scotland, Renfrewshire Law Centre, the Law Society of Scotland and the Faculty of Advocates, will host the Major International Conference of the decade in Paisley, the locus delicti, to examine, discuss and celebrate eighty years of the law of tort, negligence and delict.
To mark this landmark case and Irwin Mitchell’s 100th birthday celebrations we are expanding our pro bono activities to local schools to develop the pupils critical thinking and awareness of law in our society.
Starting in January 2012, the aim was to teach the pupils skills in communication and critical thinking and develop their appreciation of the various roles of the people who work within a court room.
This type of pro bono initiative is part of the culture of Irwin Mitchell and regular tutoring of law to students in deprived areas has historically been a feature.
Other pro bono activities that Irwin Mitchell undertake include providing assistance to the National Money Advice Centre by training their staff on new homeowner legislation in Scotland and providing debt awareness courses to local schools to improve understanding and knowledge.
The mini trials will be Glasgow’s unique way of celebrating these 2 landmark birthdays.
