Irwin Mitchell Scotland hosted a free event, called ‘The Dangers in Work and The Wider Environments: How Safe Are You?’, at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, in association with representatives from Stirling University’s Department of Occupational and Environmental Health earlier this year.
Speakers included Professor Andrew Watterson, from the Occupational and Environmental Health Research Group at Stirling University, who discussed work hazards in Scotland and how cuts to regulatory changes are affecting firms.
He was joined by Ian Tasker, the Assistant Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), who offered a union perspective about what’s happening generally in work places in Scotland.
David Snowball, the Director for the Health and Safety Executive’s Scotland and Northern England division, spoke about the changing focus of the HSE in Scotland and how to cope with shrinking budgets and shifts in regulations.
Paul Beaumont highlighted the problems associated with asbestos in schools, John Finney MSP talked about how an independent Scotland would regulate itself and Professor Phil Taylor, from Strathclyde University Business School, presented information about precarious work situations.
