Medical Negligence Lawyers Asked To Investigate And Help Secure “Vital Answers”
The devastated mum and dad of a 30-year-old man who died months after a court granted him approval for kidney dialysis are demanding answers.
Jordan Tooke, from Norwich, had severe learning disabilities and end-stage kidney disease. In October 2023, he started undergoing dialysis, just a few days after a court judgment granted the treatment.
Man dies two days after line to administer dialysis becomes disconnected
During treatment on 28 August 2024, a central venous catheter (CVC line) used to administer dialysis, became disconnected from the dialysis machine. Jordan died two days later.
Throughout the court case, Jordan and his mum Camillia were supported by medical treatment dispute lawyers at Irwin Mitchell. Following her son’s death, Camilla, asked Irwin Mitchell’s medical negligence team to investigate his care and support her through an inquest.
Camilla, 59, has now spoken of her devastating loss and how she hopes an inquest will provide her with the “vital answers she deserves.”
Katie Witterick is the specialist medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Camilla.
Expert Opinion
“Jordan was Camilla’s pride and joy and losing him continues to have a profound effect on her and the rest of his loved ones.
“The past seven months, whilst trying to come to terms with his death and the circumstances surrounding it, has been incredibly difficult. What’s particularly distressing for her is Jordan died so soon after being granted life-sustaining kidney treatment.
“Understandably, Camilla has a number of concerns around Jordan’s death and if more could have been done to help him.
“While nothing can bring Jordan back, the inquest is a major milestone in being able to provide Camilla with the vital answers she deserves.
“If during the course of the hearing any issues are identified, lessons need to be learned to improve patient safety for others.” Katie Witterick
Inquest: Jordan Tooke's story
Following judgment in the Court of Protection – a specialist court that make decisions on behalf of people who lack capacity - in October 2023, Jordan underwent dialysis three times a week.
After surpassing all expectations in handling dialysis, he was also reactivated on the kidney transplant list, the same week he died, his family said.
Mum pays tribute to 'happy' son
Camilla said: “Jordan had a really good quality of life and was like a different person after he started on the dialysis. He was happy and had recently started attending a day centre which he enjoyed. That’s what makes his death even more devastating.
“While time has passed, I still have many questions over what happened to Jordan. I know the inquest and reliving everything that happened will be upsetting but it’s something I need to do to honour my son’s memory.”
An inquest into Jordan’s death is due to be heard at Norfolk Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, 18 March.
