Specialist medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have spoken of their concern over the recall of up to 600 patients who underwent shoulder surgery in Walsall.
A Hospital Trust has announced it will recall hundreds of people amid concerns over the standard of surgery patients received from Mian Munawar Shah at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Mr Shah's solicitor said as matters were ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment.

Expert Opinion
“Our clients have a number of concerns about the standard of shoulder surgery they received. In some cases they reported that their symptoms persisted or worsened following operations which they hoped would alleviate their problems.
“News of this recall has understandably added to their worry and no doubt will cause concern among other patients. What’s particularly alarming is the numbers potentially involved – with the Trust saying up to 600 people may be contacted.
“It’s now vital that all affected patients receive the care and support they may need. We’re determined to provide those we represent with not only the answers they deserve but also, where appropriate, access to specialist treatment and therapies to fix their limb problems.
“As part of the recall and review, it’s also vital that all lessons possible are learned to improve patient care for others.” Ryan Blake - Associate Solicitor
Concerns over Mian Munawar Shah's private hospital and NHS practice
Concerns about Mr Shah’s practice date back to at least 2010 and also include operations he performed in private hospitals.
In 2020, Walsall Healthcare Trust contacted the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) which carried out a general review of surgery and then a further review into Mr Shah's individual work.
A recall of his patients was recommended by the RCS.
Mr Shah has a number of conditions on his doctor’s registration. These include not carrying out latarjet procedures or shoulder joint replacements without supervision. He must also get the approval of the General Medical Council before starting work in a non-NHS post or setting.
