Families ‘Want No Stone Left Unturned’ In Quest For Answers

Families have welcomed a criminal investigation into maternity services at a Hospital Trust at the centre of an inquiry into baby deaths.

West Mercia Police has confirmed it is looking into alleged failings at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and whether they are grounds for a criminal case.

An independent inquiry is already investigating nearly 1,200 cases connected to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury. These include the deaths of babies and mums as well as cases where children have been left with disabilities after being diagnosed with serious brain injuries. 

West Mercia Police has confirmed it has met with Donna Ockenden, the senior midwife who is leading the independent inquiry, and NHS officials to discuss complaints made against the Trust. The force is now investigating whether they are grounds to bring criminal charges either against the Trust or against individuals.

An investigation was ordered into baby deaths at the Trust in 2017 by then Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Initially the investigation was to look into 23 cases but was expanded to more than 270 last year.

Earlier this year the review announced it was now looking into 1,170 cases stretching back 40 years.
