£3,000 Donation Makes A Difference For Leeds Charity This Christmas

A Leeds law firm is donating £3,000 to a local charity this Christmas, as part of the firm’s commitment to relieving poverty and suffering among the homeless during the festive season.

Irwin Mitchell is making the donation to Homeless Street Angels, as a share of the £39,000 set aside for homeless charities across the country by the Irwin Mitchell Charities Foundation (IMCF).

The donation is part of a nationwide programme developed by the IMCF, an independent registered charity that has donated more than £2 million to good causes in the UK and £284,000 in 2018 alone since it was established in 1997.

In 2018, the IMCF donated £13,000 to homeless charities at Christmas and the success of what has become an annual tradition, has seen the amount given to good causes tripled for 2019, with Homeless Street Angels chosen for supporting the homeless in the region.

The Leeds office chose Homeless Street Angels, after hearing about the charity from colleagues who volunteer with them and decided to do what they could to help this Christmas.

Homeless Street Angels provide vital support to the homeless in Headingley and Leeds city centre, doing everything from arranging collections of furniture for people they rehouse, to taking out hot food, clothes, toiletries and essentials to those who need them on a daily basis.

In addition to providing an outreach every Thursday on the streets, the charity is working with the city council and Housing Options to re-house people and is part of the Leeds Homeless Charter to help eradicate homelessness in the city.

Becky Joyce of Homeless Street Angels said: “A £3,000 donation is a big help and I would like to thank the team at Irwin Mitchell for thinking of us. We go through three times as much during the freezing temperatures and this money will go directly to help reverse the spiral of homelessness in Leeds during the winter months.”

Sanna Mazhar, a lawyer from the Irwin Mitchell Leeds office and member of the IMCF, said: “We are thrilled to have £3,000 to donate this Christmas and when we heard from colleagues who volunteer with Homeless Street Angels, we wanted to help. They only received charity status in October and this donation seemed the perfect present in the circumstances.”
