Irwin Mitchell Instructed To Investigate Nerve Damage Following Spinal Surgery
The BBC’s Inside Out documentary news programme is to examine concerns regarding operations by a consultant neurosurgeon in Coventry who was stopped from performing two different procedures following an inspection by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) last year.
The BBC alleges that Hussien El-Maghraby, a consultant neurosurgeon for University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust removed a healthy part of a brain instead of a tumour during one operation.
As well as the RCS inspection it is also believed the GMC has investigated but has taken no further action.
Specialist medical negligence lawyers are also representing a patient who suffered injuries following surgery by the consultant.
Experts who have seen videos of the neurosurgeon working described it as “rough surgery”.
The RCS was asked to review four cases in September 2017. The NHS Trust has now confirmed to the BBC that Mr El-Maghraby should refrain from carrying out two specific surgical procedures pending further training and mentorship. These are complex spinal operations and brain surgery while the patient is awake. The review identified no issues with routine brain cancer surgery.
Irwin Mitchell is representing a patient who had spinal surgery last year resulting in nerve damage.
Expert Opinion
“These reports are extremely worrying and we can confirm that we are instructed to investigate concerns on behalf of a patient who has suffered nerve damage after spinal surgery last year. It is important that any patients who suffer injuries or complications following complex surgery receive the support and rehabilitation they need as soon as possible.
“Hopefully our investigation will help identify any potential lessons that can be learned to improve patient safety in future.” Mandy Luckman - Director of Strategic Growth (Seriously Injured and Vulnerable Audience)
