Irwin Mitchell React As Dementia Is Named England’s Top Cause Of Death
Dementia champions from law firm, Irwin Mitchell, are appealing for a local gym or fitness instructor to join the Newbury Dementia Friendly Community Forum (NDFCF), to help raise awareness of how exercise and healthy eating can help reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Last month Public Health England (PHE) said there is growing evidence that a third of dementia cases could be a result of factors potentially in our control, and that actions like taking regular exercise and not smoking can reduce your risk of developing it.
The NDFCF was launched this summer and is a volunteer led group which brings together businesses and community members to look at ways to help people affected by dementia to live well in their community. This includes developing new activities and social opportunities for people living with dementia and their carers.
Stewart Stretton-Hill, an expert in elderly and vulnerable client issues at Irwin Mitchell, Newbury, is heavily involved in the NDFCF and WBDAA and an Alzheimer’s Society ‘Dementia Friend’.
Expert Opinion
“Following last week’s news that dementia has become the top cause of death in England and Wales, PHE have advised that there are things that we can do to help prevent the disease.
“Being physically active will help reduce the risk of dementia along with eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight.”.
“With this in mind we are inviting representation from a local gym or fitness instructor to join the forum and help us to raise awareness about how to incorporate exercise and healthy eating into their lifestyle.” Stewart Stretton-Hill - Senior Associate Solicitor
