MP Caroline Spelman Demands Action In Wake Of Ian Paterson Breast Surgery Controversy

Specialist medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell who represent a number of women who underwent negligent, and in some cases, unnecessary breast surgery have backed calls for improved protection for victims.

Meriden MP Caroline Spelman has called for increased legislation to protect victims of negligent medical treatment after surgeon Ian Paterson carried out more than 1,000 negligent surgeries.

Many of the women underwent procedures at the Solihull Hospital and the private Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull and continue to wait for compensation as Paterson’s medical insurance is disputing the compensation claims because some of the procedures Paterson carried out may be illegal and therefore not included in his cover.

Mrs Spelman said that her petition will call on MPs to consider adopting legislation so insurance companies must provide affordable cover for every aspect of healthcare professionals’ work.

The petition also asks for all healthcare professionals under investigation for negligence to be suspended from working in either the NHS or the private sector until disciplinary procedures have been completed.

“We have campaigned for similar legislation in the past and we hope that this latest petition will encourage MPs to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of patients, as well as providing them with the ability to access funds that many need to access the help and support required after such a terrible ordeal, as well as any further procedures required to help them recover.
