Widow And Daughter Call On Asbestos Lawyers For Help

The family of a former maintenance man who died from the asbestos-related disease mesothelioma at the start of this year have joined with specialist lawyers to urge his former colleagues to come forward with information regarding how he came into contact with the deadly material.

Stanley Giles, who was originally from Edmonton in North London but went on to live in Chingford, was 87 when he died in March 2015 around 15 months after being diagnosed with the terminal cancer of the lining of the lung linked to asbestos exposure decades ago.

His widow Marion, who was married to him for 43 years, has come together with her daughter Andrea to instruct expert asbestos lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to seek justice regarding his death - and they are now appealing for anyone who worked with Stanley to provide further information regarding working conditions he faced.

They believe Stanley was exposed to asbestos during his work for British Oxygen Company in both the 1960s and 1970s, where they understand he was required to break up and work on asbestos panels, and pipe lagging.

Mary Mulhall, the asbestos-related disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell who is representing the Giles family, said: “Stanley’s story is like a great number we have seen through our work, where exposure to asbestos during general maintenance or construction work has gone on to have terrible, tragic consequences many years down the line.

Marion Giles said: “Stanley was a much-loved husband and father and we are still trying to come to terms with his death and the nature of it.

“He first developed symptoms around December 2013 and was diagnosed with mesothelioma a month later. His health deteriorated so rapidly after that and we knew at Christmas that it was going to be his last. He required constant care and it was so difficult to watch him suffering.

“It was horrible to see the effect that mesothelioma had on him and now we just want to know how he came to be diagnosed with the illness. Any help or information would be hugely appreciated.”
