Dr Davinder Jeet Bains was sentenced to a 12-year jail term at Swindon Crown Court last May after pleading guilty to 39 sexual offences, on top of a further 65 earlier charges. Judge Douglas Field told Bains; "you are a disgrace to the medical profession".
The 47-year-old was placed on the sex offenders register for life and also struck off the medical register in August last year when the independent Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service panel found his fitness to practise was impaired because of his convictions.
However, Bain's sentence appeal was yesterday (30 June) accepted by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Mr Justice Sweeney and Mr Justice Nicol at Canterbury Crown Court. He will now serve 10 years.
Medical law and abuse experts at Irwin Mitchell are representing several women who fell victim to Dr Bains at the Tinkers Lane Surgery in Royal Wootton Bassett between July 2009 and June 2012 and said their clients are bitterly disappointed that he will not serve the full jail term.
The leading law firm also confirmed for the first time today that the Partners at the Tinkers Lane Surgery have been notified of the victim’s civil claims and the impact the horrific ordeal continues to have on their lives.
It is hoped this will lead to an admission of liability which will pave the way for a settlement to be agreed that provides the women with access to the extensive psychological therapies they need.
Rosanna Cox, a specialist abuse lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: "The appeal launched by Dr Bains has caused our clients a great deal of distress as it has served as a very painful reminder of the sickening treatment he subjected them too.
"They have been living in fear that his sentence may be reduced which unfortunately has been made a reality today and they feel the decision undermines the severity of the abuse they suffered. They are understandably bitterly disappointed by the decision.
"This man massively abused the position of trust in which he was placed and carried out the most horrendous crimes that continue to have a devastating effect on those who came into contact with him.
"We are now working to secure our clients further justice and we are awaiting the surgery’s response which we hope will ensure we can arrange quick settlements for our clients that will fund the emotional support they need."
