Police Contacted By More Than 30 Women

Greater Manchester Police have revealed they have spoken to more than 30 women in relation to reporting incidents of historic sexual abuse at Chetham’s School of Music since the investigation’s launch in February.

In a statement, the force has confirmed that detectives are now investigating a pool of around 10 offenders in relation to the reports, while around a dozen third-party reports are also being examined.

Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Daniels from the force’s Protective Services Division said that many of those who have come forward were “spurred on” following the decision of Frances Andrade to come forward in relation to former teacher Michael Brewer.

Mr Brewer, from Birmingham, was convicted earlier this year of abusing Ms Andrade at the school during the 1970s and 1980s.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that, as part of its ongoing investigations, a 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and remains on bail pending further enquiries.

The force’s update has also come after a Channel 4 News investigation revealed allegations of inappropriate behaviour at other specialist music schools in the UK.

“It can be immensely difficult for those who have suffered physical or psychological abuse to come forward and speak out about what they have been through. However, many of those now taking that step will have been encouraged by recent cases which have shown that victims will have their voices heard.

“Anyone affected by abuse deserves answers about what they have been through, as well as reassurances that lessons will be learned that the same issues will never be repeated again.

“We hope that all of those with concerns about abuse continue to come forward and are also given the vital support they need to come to terms with the problems they have suffered.”
