Product Liability Experts Comment On Latest Developments
By Rob Dixon
Manufacturers of household appliances have been urged by legal experts to ensure consumer safety is a top priority, after new concerns were raised regarding global firm Beko’s products.
Numerous reports have called into question the efforts of the company to ensure people were urgently made aware of potential risks related to some products.
This included cookers and fridge-freezers which were linked to fatal incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning and fire respectively, with the speed of Beko’s response to the problems causing specific concern.
David Urpeth, a Partner and expert in product liability claims at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Very serious concerns have been raised in relation to these white goods and it is vital that Beko, and the industry as a whole, reviews what is in place to ensure consumers are properly informed over potential faults with products as soon as possible.
“The safety of consumers should always be a top priority, so working to keep their best interests at the top of the agenda is hugely important.
“However, while emergency procedures and recalls are vital, we would also urge manufacturers to tackle this issue at source – fundamentally by ensuring that household appliances are thoroughly checked and tested before they reach market.
“Consumers place great faith in the expectation that items they buy are completely safe for them and their families to use. Lessons need to be learned from situations like this to guarantee that such issues will not be repeated in the future.”
