Car crash brain injury leads to compensation
A Northumbrian man has won damages two years after a road accident left him with a serious brain injury and mobility problems requiring 24-hour care.
64-year old George Stephenson was hit by a car, after stopping to repair a blown tyre on the A189 near Cramlington on November 19 2004.
In a judgement at Newcastle High Court today, His Honour Judge Walton awarded substantial damages to Mr Stephenson.
Mr Stephenson, father of two and a former British Gas engineer, suffered a severe brain injury which requires him to use a wheelchair, after a Fiat Punto driven by Jason Burgon struck him at speed while he was repairing the tyre.
The head injuries suffered by Mr Stephenson were so severe that he has no recollection of the accident, and he was treated at the Wansbeck General Hospital, where he spent 51 days in intensive care.
Before the accident, Mr Stephenson was in good health and ran a greyhound training business with his daughter, Amanda. Now he is no longer able to work in any capacity.
He needs 24-hour care and supervision, continuing physiotherapy and other therapies. He has mobility problems, which requires hoisting and the use of an electric wheelchair, has no functional use of his left arm and needs help to eat and drink.
Speaking for the family, Mr Stephenson's daughter Amanda said: "It's been a very difficult few years for dad and the family and no amount of money will bring back the quality of life he had before the accident.
"Dad was always very active in his life and business and it has taken him a long time to adjust."
She added: "The payout will undoubtedly make his standard of life better and will pay for much-needed equipment and physiotherapy, which will improve his general health and give him a better future."
