Irwin Mitchell’s fund-raising for disabled children's charity Newlife
As a medical negligence solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, I've built up an excellent relationship with Newlife The Charity for Disabled Children over a number of years, and I continue to search for ways to grow and develop this relationship nationally so we can raise awareness of the important work they do.
Law firm supports charity
On 1 March, Newlife had their annual Sparkle Day. This encourages supporters to raise funds for, and awareness of, Newlife, who help change the lives of children living with disabilities and terminal illnesses around the UK.
To support Sparkle Day, at Irwin Mitchell we organised a raffle which raised over £500 and included some great prizes.
On 7 April, four of my colleagues took part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for Newlife. Not only did they all do incredibly well in their runs, but they also raised over £4,000 which will go a long way in supporting the charity.
What does Newlife do?
Newlife is the biggest provider of specialist children’s equipment to disabled families in the UK. The charity was founded over 30 years ago with an aim to ensure that disabled and terminally ill children get the best possible start in life and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. It does this by providing families with equipment which otherwise they would be unable to source or afford such as beds, buggies, wheelchairs and seating systems, among others.
Another vital service which Newlife provides is a free nurse helpline which, as well as providing help with applications for equipment grants and emergency equipment loans, can also offer support and information on a range of topics – as well as a kind listening ear when needed. Families can contact the nurses to discuss their circumstances and receive advice and support, which is a unique service.
As well as the emergency equipment loans and grants given to families, Newlife also understands the importance of enrichment and quality of life for disabled or terminally ill children. The charity provides specialist toys through loans of play therapy pods. These not only help children to learn and develop through play, but provide families with a better understanding of the needs that their child has and an ability to bond.
How we've helped
Last year, Irwin Mitchell provided funds to help Newlife buy another play therapy pod for families in need.
I'm grateful to those who have donated so far and look forward to future fundraising opportunities and partnership working with this brilliant and vital charity.
