Biography
I have over 30 years' experience in advising in all areas of family law, but have a particular specialism in representing clients who have complex and often high value financial arrangements, in situations involving couples at various stages of their relationships. This ranges from those who are planning to live together or marry, where I advise upon and prepare prenuptial agreements, to those whose relationships have ended and wish to separate or divorce.
I have developed a busy practice in advising unmarried clients as to their rights when relationships end, as couples increasingly choose not to marry yet many have very little knowledge of their rights upon separation.
I also advise in cases involving children disputes, with a particular specialism in cases involving internal and international relocation.
I advise clients from all walks of life, but typically represent business owners, entrepreneurs, sportspersons and those from the rural and farming communities. I work in collaboration with clients' other professional advisers, such as accountants, land agents and financial advisers to ensure the best outcome from the client.
Key Highlights
I was the lead solicitor in the reported case of KSO v MJO & Anor [2009] Fam Law 1024, where I successfully acted for intervenors in financial remedy proceedings.
I recently acted for a successful party in a contested trial in a cohabitation case where the client secured costs on an indemnity basis.
What inspired you to get into law?
I gained an interest in law after work experience with a local solicitor, who took me under his wing and gave me the enthusiasm and confidence to choose law as a career. My dad was very supportive and encouraged me every step of the way, even through those times of self-doubt. After starting life as a trainee solicitor and experiencing life as a family lawyer I knew that I had found my niche and haven't looked back.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role
There are two:-
- Making clients happy, whether that be the outcome, or wit the level of service and support they have received; and
- Mentoring and encouraging colleagues who are at the beginning of their careers and watching them develop.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
It is such a a supportive and collegiate environment in which to work, with amazing colleagues.
What do you do away from the office?
I love spending time with my family, as this is such precious time.
I also have the dubious pleasure of supporting Newcastle United, attempting to reduce my golf handicap and enjoying live music whenever possible.
