Biography
I am a paralegal in the Group Actions and Product Liability Team, based in Sheffield. I manage my own cases and assist senior members of the team dealing with claims arising from clinical negligence and defective products, including medical devices, consumer goods and vehicles.
I joined the team in 2023 as soon as I finished completing my Legal Practice Course
Key highlights
I am currently managing a group of cases arising from treatment provided by consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Mian Munawar Shah
I am also involved in assisting senior members of the team with the Thirlwall Inquiry in Liverpool. The Inquiry examines issues arising from the murder and attempted murder of babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital by former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby. We represent family core participants at the Inquiry and are working alongside solicitors representing other family core participants.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
Irwin Mitchell is such a lovely place to work due to the incredibly supportive and friendly working environment that surrounds you. You never feel out of place and quickly become part of the family. Due to the layout of our office and having an open plan desk area, Irwin Mitchell completely encourages you to speak with all of your colleagues and it allows you to feel more at ease when requiring additional support from senior members of the team.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
Not only do I find the area I work in particularly rewarding as you can see the positive impact that you have on your clients by supporting them through such a difficult time in their lives, but also the fact that these are group claims increases this even more. Being able to help and support people suffering similar injuries and going through similar experiences is truly fulfilling.
What inspired you to get into law?
For as long as I can remember, I always envisioned a career in law. Law was unfortunately not offered as an A-level subject at my school but that did not stop me from attending events for students at various law firms and participating in my very first Mock trial.
I knew I wanted to go into law and develop the key skills associated with it. But I decided to study History BA as an undergraduate subject at the University of Leicester first. I knew the existence of the Graduate Diploma in Law, which is essentially a law conversion course after university and so, I decided to take this route. After I completed my undergraduate degree, I moved to Sheffield and completed my Graduate Diploma in Law and then continued by applying and completing my Legal Practice Course with master’s at the University of Law in Sheffield.
During my last few months of studies of my Legal Practice Course, I applied for the role of paralegal at Irwin Mitchell and fortunately got it! My particular interest throughout my legal studies was tort and personal injury and clinical negligence and so, I felt very fortunate that my first job after my studies would be the exact thing that I was passionate about.
This area of law is incredibly rewarding, and I do not take lightly the amount of stress it can cause our clients and the trust they put in us during an especially upsetting time of their lives. I feel privileged in my role that I am able to help and contribute to our clients achieving a positive outcome out of a negative experience.
What do you do away from the office?
I am a keen traveller whether that is locally or abroad as I take great interest in meeting new people and learning about the history, language and culture of a new place. I believe that I grow more confident and independent as an individual, the more of the world I explore
When I am at home, I enjoy making the most of my time with my friends, family and partner, all of whom I adore.
