Biography
I joined the Irwin Mitchell Costs Team in August 2013 and qualified as a Costs Lawyer in 2017 before being promoted to Associate in 2020. I lead the Birmingham Costs Team and provide support in all aspects of the costs process, from preparing a Bill of Costs, negotiating with the opponent through to resolution or assessment by the Court if necessary.
I have a particular interest in multi-party actions, having previously assisted in leading the Group Actions Team and particularly advising on a large Claimant Steering Group in the Coke Oven Worker litigation.
I also support our Litigation teams by conducting advocacy at Costs Management Hearings, general Costs Application Hearings and Costs Directions Hearings.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
There is never a dull day at Irwin Mitchell. Due to the many facets of our work and nature of the firm, I get to work on a wide variety of files and advise on all manner of wide-reaching costs issues, which means getting involved at the forefront of an ever-changing area of law.
I have been given the support to progress my career in legal costs, and carve out a route into management, whilst also allowing me to satisfy my desire for advocacy which inspired me so much in the first place.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
I enjoy getting stuck into complex matters and achieving great results for our clients.
I also enjoy assisting my team members and passing on knowledge to assist in them developing their own careers much in the way previous leaders have assisted me.
What inspired you to get into law?
I was always intrigued by legal debates, Court hearings and the procedure involved. The ceremony of Court hearings and the charisma of advocates was something I wanted to experience first-hand.
I chose to study law at university and went on to undertake the Bar Professional Training Course, sharpening my advocacy skills. At the end of the course, I started a fledgling career, mainly providing advice and negotiating legal costs before swiftly joining Irwin Mitchell.
What do you do away from the office?
In my down time I enjoy rugby league (Season ticket holder at the Bradford Bulls for over 20 years, for my sins...) football and sport in general as well as reading, running/walking and spending time with family.
