Biography
I am a solicitor in our Public Law and Human Rights department based in Sheffield. Since qualifying in 2023, I practice across a range of public law areas including Court of Protection, Education and Community Care law.
I have a particular interest in mental capacity law and I act on behalf the Official Solicitor, advocates and family members. Much of my work involves health and welfare applications in the Court of Protection. I also have experience in deprivation of liberty challenges and best interests disputes around care, residence, and contact.
Within my Education Law practice, I focus on securing the provision of suitable education and/or services for children and young people with a wide range of special educational needs and/or disabilities. I represent families in Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunals in challenges against local authorities regarding Educational, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments and EHC Plans.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
The best thing about working at Irwin Mitchell is the people. I enjoy working with a dedicated team of highly experienced lawyers who are always willing to support me and to share their knowledge.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
We have the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. Knowing that I have helped to make that difference and having the opportunity to visit those individuals to see the changes that we have helped to achieve for them is incredibly rewarding.
What inspired you to get into law?
I enjoyed studying law at A-Level and I have always wanted to make a positive difference for others, so I decided to study law further at university and I knew almost immediately that I wanted to be a solicitor. After university I worked as a paralegal in our Public Law and Human Rights department before qualifying as a solicitor in 2023.
What do you do away from the office?
I enjoy quiet weekends catching up with friends and family, reading or walking my dog. Otherwise, I can most often be found in the theatre enjoying a musical.
Testimonials
“…I'd also need to give a special mention to Meghan Baxter who put so much valuable work into my case. Meghan's presence in court with me over 2 days was so reassuring and it would have been a far more stressful experience had she not been there. Most of all I want to thank Emma and Meghan for being so invested in my situation and making it so evident that they actually cared. I genuinely feel lucky to have had them by my side during such a challenging time” - 5* Trustpilot review
"I cannot thank Charles and Meghan Baxter for the kindness and compassion they showed me during what was an extremely difficult time. They were so knowledgeable and I immediately felt more at ease after speaking with them. They were understanding and made me feel heard, whilst also being realistic about potential outcomes. Thank you both so, so much." - 5* Trustpilot review
