Biography
I joined the Medical Negligence team at Irwin Mitchell in October 2017 as a Paralegal and qualified as a Legal Executive in August 2021.
I represent patients who have sustained from an avoidable injury as a result of negligent medical treatment. I have experience in dealing with the following types of cases:
- Stillbirth / neonatal deaths
- Orthopaedic injuries
- Surgical errors
- Delay in diagnosis and treatment of cancer
- Pressure sores
- Mental health cases (including suicide, injuries following suicide attempts and mental health conditions following physical injuries)
- Fatal cases including Inquest representation
- Extravasation Injuries
- Functional Neurological Disorder / Somatic Symptom Disorder.
Notable cases
X v an NHS Trust in West Yorkshire – case related to a one-year delay in diagnosis and treatment of melanoma resulting in X’s death. Liability was admitted and the case settled for £2 million.
R v Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust – The Claimant was admitted to Queen’s Medical Centre (Nottingham) to undergo a craniotomy. The Claimant sustained an extravasation injury (tissue damage due to the leakage of the drugs from the cannula during the index surgery).
There was a delay in diagnosis and treatment of the extravasation injury. This resulted in the Claimant undergoing unnecessary surgery, extensive scarring, a significant reduction in strength of his hand, wrist and fingers and functional neurological disorder leading to a tremor in his hand. Liability was admitted and the case settled for £210,000.
What inspired you to get into law?
I always wanted a career which involved helping people. I studied Law at A Level and then at University. I completed a module in Medical Law during my degree and thereafter decided that this was the area that I wanted to specialise in.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
Sadly, many of my clients have sustained from life changing injuries or have tragically lost a family member but are still incredibly brave and courageous. I aim to support my clients through the duration of their case and get the answers they need answers to understand their care and subsequent injuries.
I enjoy the negotiation aspect of the role as I always aim to get the best possible financial result for my clients. The highlight of my role has to be informing a client that their case has settled.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
I work in the best Claimant medical negligence team in the country. Everyone works incredibly hard to get the best possible results for their clients and it is great to be a part of it.
What do you do away from the office?
I enjoy DIY, a good series/reality TV, travelling and seeing my friends and family.
