Biography
I am a dual qualified Family Law Associate Solicitor. I was admitted to practice in England in 1997 and admitted to practice in Australia in 2003.
I deal with all aspects of family law, including any international elements. My cases include pre- and post-nuptial agreements for married couples, living together for couples who aren’t married, separation agreements, divorce and financial settlements and cases involving children.
I have extensive expertise in international cases involving England / Australia and England / Scotland, and regularly represent clients where there are cross border issues with these 2 countries. I have close connections with solicitors and experts from both countries, particularly Australia, where I lived and worked for 12 ½ years. This enables me to provide holistic advice and representation in what can be complex cases. I am often contacted by solicitors in Australia and Scotland to advise on cross border cases. I also provide training on this specialised area to other professionals including Irwin Mitchell’s internal International Team of Excellence.
I have previously been a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel, separately representing children and / or their guardian in complex children cases. I have a particular interest in the area of complex children work, and deal with all aspects of complex children cases:-
-
Domestic and international relocation;
- Child abduction;
- Parental alienation;
- Allegations of significant domestic abuse;
- Factitious illness and / or alleged non accidental injury to children;
- Issues involving substance / alcohol misuse.
I continue to represent parents in cases where children are separately represented. I also represent numerous other family members, particularly grandparents, who wish to have a continuing relationship with their grandchildren, and cases involving same sex couples.
I am also experienced in representing vulnerable clients, including those who lack capacity, and those who might have regained capacity and need tailored assistance to conduct litigation. I work closely with clients who are neurodiverse.
My aim is to guide clients through what can be a stressful time with empathy and understanding. I seek to achieve the best result possible for my clients, with robust and practical advice, in the most cost effective, diligent, and least stressful way possible.

"Not only were Irwin Mitchell - and April Wood in particular - incredibly professional & knowledgeable, but they were extremely compassionate as I navigated one of the hardest changes of my life. I was always kept informed of the status of my case and next steps/timelines were always clear and transparent. "I had a good experience from start to finish with Helen Revill and April Wood in helping me get the court order for extra access to my children, including now being able to take them on holidays abroad. Both ladies have been a big help and support throughout the whole process, especially April (who I have dealt with more) who always seems to go the extra mile to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible, and to take time to make sure that I have complete understanding at every stage of the proceedings. The counsel that April recommended to use were both very good and professional at all times, and gave a very good representation of me in all court proceedings. I would definitely recommend Irwin Mitchell to anyone in a similar situation to myself" - 5* Trustpilot review

“I was treated and represented exactly as I wanted to be. I have no hesitation in recommending Irwin Mitchell and April Wood in particular to represent exasperated, separated fathers like myself. I was taken through the stages and I was encouraged to make the right decision for me, and not for the company. The support throughout the proceedings and even afterwards have been great, and a source of comfort.” - 5* Trustpilot review
