Lawyers Call For Swift Investigation Into Problems On Sussex Beach
A swift and thorough investigation must be undertaken to determine the source of a chemical ‘mist’ which struck Birling Gap beach and left more than a hundred people needing hospital treatment, according to legal experts.
The beach was evacuated on Sunday (August 27th) after people reported suffering from problems including breathing difficulties, stinging eyes and vomiting, with authorities calling for those living nearby to keep windows and doors shut.
While the mist cleared on the following Monday, the Environment Agency and Coastal Agency are now working to investigate the cause of the issue. In addition, local MEP Keith Taylor also urged the EU Commission to collaborate and share satellite information with the UK bodies.
The calls have been welcomed by specialist public health lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who specialise in helping people who have suffered injury or illness in the UK and abroad to gain justice regarding such problems.

Expert Opinion
“Even though several days have now passed since the incident at Birling Gap, it is clear that very little is still known regarding both the type of gas which struck the beach and also where it came from.
“These problems have affected a huge number of people who were simply trying to enjoy the summer sunshine on a bank holiday, so it is clear both them and their families will want answers regarding what happened and – ultimately – how the issue will be avoided in the future.
“A swift and thorough investigation is absolutely vital and it is important that both UK and EU organisations work together to determine how this issue emerged and what can be done to prevent it happening again in the future. Public safety must always come first.” Jatinder Paul - Partner
