The Sheffield Steelkings Para Ice Hockey Club offers sporting opportunities to people with lower body disabilities and impairments. They’re empowering people to take part in an amazing team sport that's very competitive, fast-paced, highly skilled and physically demanding.
Para ice hockey players sit in metal sledges that have two skate blades underneath. They move around the ice and handle a puck by using two hockey sticks that have metal picks on one end.
When players get onto the ice, all of their daily struggles are forgotten. They get the freedom to be able to skate around the ice, and take part in a physical activity where their impairment doesn't hold them back or slow them down.
Para ice hockey is perfect for people with:
- Leg injuries
- Amputations
- Lower spinal cord injuries
- Spina bifida.
The Sheffield Steelkings encourage everyone to try the sport for themselves. They have all the spare equipment people will need, and want to hear from anyone interested in trying para ice hockey.
We’ve been supporting the Steelkings for a number of years, and it's great that our common goals to help people can come together through para ice hockey.
Lisa Fairclough, an associate solicitor from our Serious Injury team, said:
“We’re really proud to support the Sheffield Steelkings, and it’s been great to see them develop and grow over the last few seasons.
“Para ice hockey a fast-moving and exciting sport. It offers a “level playing field” for those with lower limb physical challenges to get involved and enjoy the benefits of being part of a sporting team.
“I’m excited to see how the coming season goes for Steelkings and their new development team Steel’Stings’ down at Ice Sheffield this summer. I’d encourage anyone interested to go along to check it out, or contact the team to try the sport. It’s great fun and certainly gets the blood pumping!”
