As the pandemic struck in early 2020 our Military Injury team were quick to adapt to a virtual way of supporting their colleagues, clients and communities. We chose to adapt, not stand still, and we feel it’s a testament as to why we were named winners of the Marketing Campaign of the Year at the Personal Injury awards.
In a challenging year for many, our armed forces found themselves on a very different front line and so our appreciation for our military community was stronger than ever.
When we couldn’t commemorate military anniversaries and remembrance days in the traditional way, our support moved online and here we share with you the stories from our clients and colleagues that led to us receiving the award that boosted our spirits during the virtual awards ceremony in December 2020.
VE Day 75th Anniversary
The 75th Anniversary of VE Day fell on 8 May 2020. The military community had been looking forward to this date for some time and had planned how they were going to pay their respects to those who served and mark the anniversary of guns falling silent at the end of the war in Europe. However, with face to face events cancelled, our ex-military colleagues joined together to record the 'Tribute to the Millions' in our new virtual world.
We also want to remember and shine a light on our colleague, Captain Paul Weston (Retd, Intelligence Corps 1984-2009), who features in the video. Sadly he passed away suddenly in August 2020. Following his military service, Paul began his training contract at Irwin Mitchell in 2010 and qualified as a personal injury solicitor. Paul is missed by us all and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.
Celebrating Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day took place on Saturday 27 June 2020. We planned to attend the national event in Scarborough, but like so many others we were very disappointed when this was cancelled.
However, our British Armed Forces don’t stop during a pandemic, and neither did our gratitude for their ongoing service and those who have served and given the ultimate sacrifice. In this video we extended our thanks not just to those serving, but also to their families and veterans who still wave the flag for our Armed Forces long after their retirement.
Armed Forces Week - Making Decisions Under Pressure
In addition to our commemorative colleague videos during Armed Forces Week, we also invited Blesma Outreach Officer, Andy Barlow GM, to join us in a live webinar to talk about making decisions under pressure.
A survivor of the Kajaki Dam incident in Afghanistan, Andy lost his leg when a mine exploded. The incident has since been made into a blockbuster movie titled ‘Kajaki.’ During the webinar, Andy spoke about not only the incident and the injuries he sustained in Afghanistan, but also what he has gone on to do since recovering from his injuries. His current role is with the military charity, Blesma, who support limbless veterans where he is now bringing veterans together online through virtual social events.
Thank you to our clients and communities who have continued to support our colleagues during the past year.
