Authors Says Greater NEC Knowledge Could Avoid Delays to Vital Infrastructure Projects
Greater understanding of NEC4 contracts amongst those responsible for delivering large infrastructure projects could help prevent delays, save the country millions of pounds, and support the UK’s growth agenda - according to the author of a new book on the topic.
Tim Willis, a real estate lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, authored NEC4: Effective Preparation and Management of the Construction Programme, to offer detailed insights into effectively preparing and managing construction programmes within the NEC4 suite of contracts. He aims to equip professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to streamline project delivery and enhance efficiency.
NEC contracts are a suite of construction and civil engineering contracts developed by the UK Institution of Civil Engineers. They are designed to facilitate sound project management and procurement principles, promoting collaboration, flexibility, and clear communication among parties involved in a project.
Explaining his motivation for producing the book, Tim underscores the importance of managing project delivery efficiently.
He said: "Setting a programme that coordinates delivery and provides a measure of progress is vital. This book provides guidance to those who have that responsibility."
He further elaborates on the necessity of clear reporting and accountability in project management and the role NEC4 contracts can play.
"Select committees or board rooms reporting that they have no idea when projects are likely to complete or what progress has been made or why they are delayed should be consigned to the past.
“The tools are there to achieve that if used properly. This book gives guidance as to how to achieve that."
