Sarah Bonner, from Redditch in Worcestershire had worked as a shop floor assembly worker at Thorlux Lighting based Redditch for nine years when she was thrown back whilst assembling a light fitting on 21 February 2013.
The 40-year-old instructed specialist personal injury experts at Irwin Mitchell to investigate her accident and find out if more could have been done to prevent the electric shock. The defendant currently denies liability for the incident but is considering specialist reports by engineers commissioned by Irwin Mitchell into the case.
Sarah was taken to Alexander Hospital by one of her colleagues after the accident, where she was rushed to the resuscitation unit and put on a heart monitor as she was suffering from shortness of breath and chest pains after the electric shock. She was monitored and resuscitation was put on standby as her heart was in fibrillation.
Due to the force of the electric shock, Sarah also sustained an injury to her neck and was referred to a physiotherapist; her injury still causes her daily pain and needs painkillers to relive her symptoms. She also suffered internal damage to the muscles in her arms and chest.
Commenting on her case, Sarah said: “I didn’t realise how serious my condition was until it was explained to me at the hospital. For months after the accident I struggled to get around because I was in so much pain and became tired very easily. The first few weeks I needed help from my family to do everything from getting out of bed, to brushing my teeth and having a shower.
“The accident has had a great impact on my life as I am still recovering now. I still suffer from chest pain, debilitating exhaustion and a low heart rate. I struggle to sleep due to the pain in my neck and I was unable to drive for a long time since the accident because of the injury to my neck..
“I hope that with the help of my legal team at Irwin Mitchell I can finally put the incident behind me and start to move on with the rest of my life and continue on the road to recovery.”
