International serious injury lawyer welcomes new road safety measures in Spain
As a specialist in International Serious Injury, I regularly act for injured and bereaved clients involved in road traffic accidents abroad or tourists involved in accidents while visiting Scotland.
Many accidents could have been avoided if the driver had been vigilant and familiarised themselves with the laws and signage of the country they are visiting before they got behind the wheel.
Accidents too common in UK and abroad
Road accidents can have devastating consequences for the people involved and their families. While measures to improve road safety have had a significant impact in the UK and abroad, accidents are still too common.
Clearly visible signage and road markings which can be universally understood by locals and tourists alike can significantly improve road safety.
New road markings in Spain to indicate overtaking prohibited
In my role as head of international serious injury at Irwin Mitchell Scotland, I was pleased to note recently that the Spanish Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) is rolling out new road markings consisting of a continuous red line in the centre of the road in areas where overtaking is prohibited.
The new marking has already been applied to the A-355 road near Coin, Malaga known as the “highway of death” which has seen 10 fatalities in the past 12 months despite previous attempts to improve safety. The red line is designed to give a clearly visible warning to the driver that overtaking is strictly prohibited. The consequences of undertaking an illegal overtaking manoeuvre in Spain are fines of up to €400 (£340) and the deduction of four points from a driving licence. It will be interesting to consider the impact this measure has on reducing road accidents in accident black spots in Spain in the months and years ahead.
Holidaymakers urged to familiarise themselves with measures
UK holidaymakers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the laws and road safety measures in place before driving abroad. Awareness and understanding of these measures can help prevent accidents and ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday experience.
