Elder abuse: A 'serious issue that requires immediate attention and action' says legal expert

Reading about Nicola Hughes’ experience with her mother’s care at Barrogil House in Fife was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. 

As a legal professional who specialises in abuse cases, I found this case particularly disturbing. It highlighted the severe issues that can arise in care homes and the desperate measures families sometimes have to take to ensure their loved ones are safe.

Many forms of elder abuse

Elder abuse is a pervasive issue that extends far beyond individual cases. It can occur in various settings, including private homes, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. 

Abuse can take many forms, such as physical, emotional, financial, and neglect. Each type of abuse has devastating effects on the well-being and dignity of elderly individuals.

What does the data show?

Statistics show that between 50,000 and 90,000 older people living in their own homes in Scotland may suffer at least one form of abuse. Psychological abuse is the most common, affecting 36% of victims, followed by physical abuse (25%), financial abuse (20%), institutional abuse (12%), neglect (5%), and sexual abuse (2%). Additionally, a 2020 poll by Hourglass revealed that there were more than 225,000 older victims of abuse in Scotland.

In my role as a legal expert, it's clear to me that the need for rigorous standards and oversight in care homes is crucial. Families should not have to resort to covert measures to ensure their loved ones are treated with respect and compassion. It's crucial for care homes to maintain high standards and for regulatory bodies to enforce these standards rigorously.
