Extension of the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme: a continued commitment to supporting families

The Ministry of Justice has announced the extension of the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme for another year to March 2026, continuing its support for families seeking to resolve disputes outside of court.

This initiative, which provides up to £500 towards mediation costs, has proven to be a valuable resource for many families.

Success and impact

Since its inception, the scheme has helped over 7,200 families, with more than two-thirds reaching agreements without the need for court intervention. This extension ensures that even more families can benefit from a quicker, more affordable, and less adversarial process.

Stephen Burke, Chair of the Family Mediation Council (FMC), expressed his support for the extension, stating: “The analysis of the family mediation voucher scheme has shown it to be successful in helping people make important agreements without the need to go to court. The FMC welcomes its extension, not least as this will continue to ensure that families on low incomes can access mediation to help them resolve conflict. ”

Eligibility and application

The scheme isn't means tested and provides a £500 voucher per family towards the cost of mediation sessions relating to children.

Benefits of the Scheme

  • Less animosity: mediation supports parents to work together to find solutions for their family, as opposed to being opponents in adversarial court proceedings.
  • Child-centred solutions: children are the centre of the mediation process. Parents are supported to consider the impact of the decisions they're making upon their children. Older children can also be involved in mediation and express their views through Child Inclusive Mediation.
  • Efficiency: mediated outcomes involve a fraction of the cost of litigation, both in terms of the financial cost and the time required to reach a conclusion. Families retain control of the outcome, reducing stress and anxiety. In addition, research has shown that mediated outcomes, where both parties have invested in plan, are more likely to be adhered to than an order imposed by the court, which may leave one or both parents feeling aggrieved.

Looking ahead

The extension of the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme highlights the increasing importance of mediation as a means of helping families find tailored solutions to the many difficulties that arise following the breakdown of a relationship.

By providing a safe, neutral, and confidential environment, mediation allows couples to part with dignity and minimise the impact of separation on any children involved.
