Shared Parental Leave for Grandparents
It has been announced that the Government plans to extend shared parental leave beyond parents, to grandparents. However, employers who may only just be getting used to dealing with shared parental leave requests and the complex regulations in this regard, need not worry just yet. Whilst this does seem to be on the Government's agenda, it is not likely to come into force until 2018, following consultation in 2016. Further, grandparents applying to take shared parental leave are likely to be subject to similar eligibility criteria as the current regime applies to parents.
Working grandparents will be allowed to take time off and share parental leave pay to help care for their grandchildren, the government has said. The plan would extend the current system, which allows parents to share leave and statutory parental pay.It was announced by Chancellor George Osborne as the Conservative conference began in Manchester.”
