We helped secure a six-figure settlement for Claire* after she had unsuccessful procedures, which resulted in a through-knee amputation of her leg
What happened to Claire?
Claire had peripheral artery disease in her legs, which limited her walking ability. Despite going to Watford General Hospital, her issues weren’t treated correctly.
Claire had inappropriate, invasive, and unsuccessful vascular procedures. She experienced months of pain, infections, pressure sores, necrosis, scarring, and trauma.
After all these treatments, Claire had to have a through-knee amputation of her left leg. She now needs to use a wheelchair to move around.
How has this affected Claire’s life?
Claire has lost her independence since the amputation. Before the incident, although her walking ability was limited, she was social and active, but she struggled getting used to using her wheelchair rather than walking.
Claire has struggled to come to terms with her new way of life, as she struggled to recognise her own body. These feelings left her reluctant to leave her house, leaving her isolated and experiencing low moods.
To help with her recovery, Claire needs assistive equipment, rehabilitation, counselling, and adaptations to her home.
How did we help?
Claire and her family contacted our medical negligence team to claim compensation not only for her negligent treatment, but also for her pain and suffering.
Ania Bean worked with Claire to gather all the information about what had happened to her. Using independent medical experts, we took a claim to the NHS trust. Our evidence showed they’d acted negligently, and the leg amputation was avoidable.
When presented with the claim, the NHS trust admitted that some care was substandard. But they argued that even with the correct care, Claire would've still needed the amputation. Before the court date, we reached a six-figure settlement with the trust. This meant Claire didn’t have to relive the trauma in court.
This money will be used to help Claire access the care she needs going forward to regain her independence and confidence.
On Claire’s claim, Ania said: “No amount of money can compensate our client and her family for what they endured, but our client’s care needs are substantial. She also requires assistive equipment, rehabilitation, counselling, and adaptations to her home.
“We did everything we could to secure financial compensation for her as early as possible, despite various delays caused by the Defendant. We’re pleased that the client and her family can now move on with their lives and put this ordeal behind them.”
