Jasprit suffered permanent inferior alveolar nerve damage following the placement of an implant at LR5. We helped her get access to both physical and psychological support, and compensation to cover her loss of earnings.
What happened to Jasprit?
Jasprit underwent extraction and immediate implant placement at LR5 in 2020.
In the following days, her face swelled, and the area was still numb. The dentists who performed the extraction and implant placement advised her to return to the clinic and, despite being told everything was okay around the nerve, they removed the implant.
Over the next few months, she had follow-up appointments after still experiencing numbness and swelling, as well as sensitivity to touch and temperature changes. The numbness also meant she would often drool, have food or drink fall out of her mouth, and not know when something was on her face.
Jasprit was given the impression it would soon improve. This is despite experiencing pain when she touched her jawbone.
Jasprit was referred to a specialist. After hearing her story, the specialist advised Jasprit that she had alveolar nerve damage that couldn’t be fixed and that it was permanent.
The specialist raised concerns about the size of the implant used. Jasprit was told she could undergo a nerve procedure to try to repair the damage, but there was a significant chance it could get worse.
How has this impacted Jasprit’s life?
Jasprit still has numbness and pain in her lower lip, chin, and gum. She described this as similar to the feeling of local anaesthetic wearing off. Her lower lip is also drooping and although this isn’t significant, she is conscious of it.
Before this, Jasprit exercised daily, but now she can no longer do the same exercises because of the tingling and irritation it causes. She no longer goes running or speed walking because of the vibrations on her face.
She has constant pain that’s made worse when her face is touched, when there’s a temperature change, or when she eats anything not bland.
Everyday things like kissing her partner or children or applying makeup are now uncomfortable because of the pain it causes.
The injuries have also impacted her mental health. Jasprit struggles to find the motivation to do anything and when she does go out, she covers her face to hide the drooping.
She also struggles with the fact food or drink falls out of her mouth and she can’t feel when she has something on her face. Jasprit now only eats or drinks in front of her immediate family.
She struggles with her appearance because of the drooping and the fact she can no longer wear makeup.
Jasprit was a Financial Services Regulatory/Commercial Lawyer and planned to go back to work after her third child turned one. However, her injuries have prevented this. She fears she won’t be able to manage the constant pain and doesn’t feel mentally ready.
How did we help Jasprit?
Allie-Louise Grover worked with Jasprit to help her get compensation for the dental negligence she experienced.
Allie started by gathering evidence, including Jasprit’s medical records and the opinion of an independent medical expert.
The case was presented to the Defendant, but liability was denied. Allie started court proceedings to present our case in front of a judge.
We were able to settle on a five-figure settlement for Jasprit shortly after court proceedings were commenced.
The settlement allows Jasprit to access therapies for her nerve damage and psychological injuries. Both will have a positive impact on her relationship with her family. She’s also been compensated for her loss of earnings and care needs.
Expert opinion
On Jasprit’s claim, Allie said: “Jasprit was failed on multiple occasions and the impact is that she’s left with irreversible damage that has both physical and mental scars. She no longer socialises with friends and can’t return to her job as planned.
“Although no money will reverse the damage, it can help support her rehabilitation and make up for work she’s been forced to miss.”
