We helped to secure compensation and rehabilitation for an American client injured while visiting family in the UK.
What happened?
Rebecca*, from New York, was visiting family in Manchester in 2016. While here, she was hit by a car at an uncontrolled crossing. Rebecca was hit by the nearside of the driver’s car, she hit the windscreen and was thrown forwards by the car.
She was taken to Salford Royal Infirmary and later transferred to Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The accident caused Rebecca severe life-changing injuries. Doctors told her family she had a diffuse axonal brain injury.
How have her injuries affected her life?
Rebecca was an active girl, as well as a hard-working student with a bright future ahead of her. She was described by family as being a bubbly person, who enjoyed camping with friends and playing lots of sports.
Rebecca wished to follow in the footsteps of her mum by raising a large family and working in education or childcare.
Now, Rebecca is unlikely to have the life she once wished for. She can’t take part in the activities she did before the accident and has withdrawn socially.
She needs ongoing therapy and support with day-to-day tasks such as childcare and cleaning.
How did we help?
Rebecca’s family contacted our specialist serious injury solicitors. They were seeking compensation to make sure they could get the right rehabilitation for Rebecca.
Cheryl Palmer-Hughes, a Partner at our firm, worked closely with Rebecca and her family to understand the full extent of her injuries. She also found out more about her future needs.
At first, the person driving the car denied liability for Rebecca’s injuries. Cheryl worked tirelessly to make sure Rebecca and her family got the compensation they deserved.
With a court case looking likely, we were able to get the compensation for Rebecca. This prevented the trauma and stress of reliving that day in court for Rebeca.
The compensation provides funding for Rebecca to access the support workers and therapies she needs for a brighter future for her and her family.
Speaking about her work with Rebecca, Cheryl said: “What happened to Rebecca while she was meant to be enjoying time with loved ones is devastating. Her injuries completely turned her life upside down.
“Thankfully, we were able to secure her compensation to make sure she still has a future to look forward to. Her everyday life might be different now, but with the support workers and therapies the compensation can pay for, she’ll be able to gradually return to some normality.”
