Our expert asbestos solicitors have secured a six-figure compensation sum for a family who lost their mother to an asbestos-related disease.
The family’s mother was a cleaner and teaching assistant at a high school for 20 years. During this time period, she was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres which are commonly linked to the lung cancer mesothelioma.
When she was diagnosed with the disease in 2015, she asked our specialist asbestos-related disease lawyers to investigate her case. Sadly, she died a few months later in June 2015.
The family continued the investigation with our lawyers after her death.
A number of her former colleagues responded to an appeal we put in the local media. They confirmed that there was asbestos in the school, which the staff would’ve been exposed to during maintenance and refurbishment works. One witness also gave us documents from the 1970s that confirmed that asbestos was in the school.
We later found that out that she was also a victim of secondary asbestos exposure due to her husband’s role as a works engineer. She would shake out and wash her husband’s work overalls which had been exposed to dust and fibres.
The family said: “We feel justice has now been done and we would now like to continue to raise awareness of mesothelioma. Our mother was one of a growing number of school employees who are being diagnosed with this dreadful disease and, since her death; we’ve been involved with fund-raising for charities raising awareness and funds for individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma.”
Nicola Handley, solicitor at Irwin Mitchell representing the family said: “This has been such a difficult time for the family, having lost her so soon after her diagnosis, but I am pleased that they now have justice and are able to move on with their lives as best they can. It is great that they will look to help others in future by raising awareness of this terrible disease.”
Speaking of the outcome, the family said: “As a family, we can’t speak highly enough regarding Nicola Handley and the rest of the Irwin Mitchell team that that looked after us, after the sad passing of our mother.”
“Right from the start, they dealt with our family incredibly sensitively and professionally, and were always on hand to answer any questions we may have had, throughout some very hard and emotional times.”
“We’ll always be grateful for the help and support they provided us, as well as the outcome they achieved, which gave us a little bit of closure after such a horrendous few years. We won’t hesitate to recommend Irwin Mitchell, they were wonderful.”
