Our expert serious injury solicitors have secured a seven-figure compensation sum for a woman who suffered life changing injuries after a road traffic accident.
On 12 July 2014, Mrs C was on her way to a wedding in a vintage bus. During the journey, the bus’s rear tyre exploded causing shrapnel to burst through the floor of the vehicle and hit her in the face.
The blunt force trauma damaged Mrs C’s optic nerve and caused bleeding in her left eye, which required immediate surgery. She also suffered a head injury which caused tinnitus, hypersensitivity to sound and dizziness. Mrs C lost her vision because of the incident and needed complex care going forward.
She approached our serious injury lawyers to see if we could help her claim compensation for the accident.
Our lawyers worked hard to secure Mrs C the funding she needed for her care and rehabilitation. We represented Mrs C at all court hearings, carried out all necessary investigations and gathered relevant evidence from different sources to support her case.
As the bus company was challenging the extent of Mrs C’s injuries, we obtained medical reports from eye and hearing specialists. Their reports detailed Mrs C’s condition and confirmed that the accident had been the sole cause of her loss of vision. This meant the bus company’s failure to maintain the tyres on the bus was negligence. The reports also recommended future treatment for Mrs C. With this information, we were better able to fight her case.
In December 2018, we negotiated a settlement figure that would help Mrs C pay for the rehabilitation and support she needed.
Laura Middleton-Guerard, serious injury specialist at Irwin Mitchell representing Mrs C said: “Due to my client’s pre-existing difficulties, a constellation of injuries and a life split between London and Australia, the matter was a complicated one. However after a successful settlement, my client can close this chapter of her life and obtain the support she needs going forward.”
