Our Military Injury Claims team helped a serviceman secure a £500,000 settlement after he was seriously injured while off-duty.
Mark* was socialising with his army colleagues when two men followed him and attacked him with a concrete weighted traffic bollard.
Mark suffered a severe and traumatic brain injury causing him long-term difficulties with basic mental functions. In 2014, Mark was medically discharged from the Armed Forces because he couldn’t carry out his duties anymore.
Mark made a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (2008). This is a government-funded scheme that helps people claim compensation if they’re the victims of a violent crime.
The Scheme contacted our armed forces lawyers to see if we could help Mark with his claim. Mark lacked the mental capacity to continue the claim without help because of his injuries, so our team stepped in to guide him through the process.
We gathered the evidence needed for Mark’s claim and the CICA awarded him with £500,000, the maximum amount that can be awarded under the Scheme.
The compensation Mark got will make a huge difference to his future rehabilitation and on-going medical care he needs.
“What happened to Mark is extremely traumatic and his life will never be the same. With this substantial settlement he can now get the care he requires to live comfortably. We’re glad we could help him achieve some justice.” – Irwin Mitchell Solicitor
