Our Serious Injury team have obtained compensation for a young client who suffered a brain injury when he was shaken violently by his mother's partner as a baby.
Our client, "G", is mostly wheelchair dependent due to his injuries. He also suffers from learning, communication, behavioural and developmental problems.
He is dependent on others for all aspects of his care, and will always lack the capacity to manage his own affairs or be able to work.
Other solicitors had previously made a compensation claim on G's behalf but failed to create any kind of substantial rehabilitation package, getting only a small interim payment. The case was transferred to our Serious Injury team in August 2015.
We were able to quickly gain a large interim payment to fund private rehabilitation, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.
In March 2016, we were able to secure another sizeable interim payment. This let G's family buy and adapt a house suitable for his care needs.
The Local Authority admitted liability in G's case, as they failed to take necessary steps to safeguard him from his mother's partner.
We were able to negotiate a settlement for G that included a lump sum plus annual payments, with a total value of over £17 million.
Hema Rana, Associate Solicitor in our Serious Injury team, said: "It is pleasing to achieve such an excellent result for our client and his family, which will provide them with security and ensure that our client's needs are met for the rest of his life. It is particularly satisfying that both legal teams were able to work amicably and efficiently to conclude this matter within two years of IM taking over conduct of the case."
