Net zero future dominates agenda at National Manufacturing Summit

Innovation and the resilience of the manufacturing sector in overcoming the challenges posed by the UK’s move to net zero by 2050 was the focus of debate at this year’s National Manufacturing Summit.

The event, which was attended by representatives from Irwin Mitchell, took place at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry on 8-9 February.

In what was a packed agenda, this year's topics were 'Field to Fork', 'Factory to Door' and 'Fossil Fuels to Renewables'.

Speakers included Andrew Mellonie, Head of Innovation in Fresh Produce and Horticulture at M&S; Andy Storer, the CEO of the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre; Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands; Dame Judith Hackitt, Chair of Make UK; and Helen Kennett, the Director of UK Government Relations at Rolls-Royce.

The 'Field to Fork' theme examined food manufacturers and took a deep-dive look into the issues of dealing with the growing demand by consumers to eat less meat and more locally produced food.

The ‘Factory to Door’ sessions discussed the future opportunities for all those involved in producing and delivering goods. The final theme, ‘Fossil Fuels to Renewables’, was delivered through a series of conference sessions showcasing the challenges and potential solutions for all those involved in renewable energy production, storage and transportation.
